Challenges of Recruiting Governing Members
According to Flo Green (2012), co-founder and vice president of Idea Encore Network:
”Nonprofit board members have two basic responsibilities—support and governance—each requiring different skills and expertise. In the role of “supporter” board members raise money, bring contacts to the organization, and act as ambassadors to the community. Equally important, the “governance” role involves protection of the public interest, being a fiduciary, selecting the executive director and assessing his or her performance, ensuring compliance with legal and tax requirements, and evaluating the organization’s work.
The board of directors, sometimes called trustees, is fiscally, legally, and morally responsible for an NPO/NGO. The board of directors plays a distinct governance role that differs considerably from that of the staff members. The board creates the operating policies and procedures for the NPO/NGO. Members typically provide both financial resources and business acumen. The recruitment, orientation, and training of board members are extremely important for ensuring their success, as they often come from diverse backgrounds and bring different areas of expertise.
