to William Collins, actually their cousin. Thus leaving Mr. Bennet’s family poor. The Pride and the Prejudice
BODY
Non-verbal ways of communication transit greater information than those verbal ways in
pride and prejudice. Language is the symbol of both sound and the meaning. Non- verbal
communication doesn’t engage words/speech and emotions are not an exception. In the film,
“Pride and Prejudice”, the eye direction that Mr. Darcy gives to the eldest Miss Bennet indicates
communicates exactly the message. The look actually was communicating that Mr. Bingley was
actually enjoying the real dance with the only handsome lady in the entire room.
Both Miller (1984) and Eisenberg & Smith (1971) accepted the fact that non-verbal ways of
communicating is better in the revealing of the emotions. In addition, words only convey around
7% of feelings whereas almost 93% of the remaining communication is normally passed through
non-verbal communication. The eye-contact that happened between Elizabeth and Darcy
communicated a lot. You can boldly see Darcy looking at Elizabeth and after sometime Darcy
says that “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me…” (Austen, 1983) The facial
expression extended to the body movements and the fact that Darcy does not find Elizabeth as
that handsome to tempt him is also in support with the film theme of Pride and Prejudice. The
facial expressions reveal the character of Darcy as arrogant.
Lydia in the film also shows off the ring to Mr. Goulding by pulling off her glove so that
Mr. Goulding can see the ring. She in fact puts her hand on the window so that Goulding can
clearly see it from a distant. This was according to their social culture that in the Western
countries, people had to put on the rings to signify that they were legally married.
Lydia moreover walks to the right hand of her mother and then told her eldest sister that
she had taken her place. This was a symbol according to the Britain culture that when a lady The Pride and the Prejudice
comes and sits at the right hand, it meant that Jane had to be very much lower than her sister.
That is why in the film, Lydia tells Jane that she now takes her place in the right hand place of
the mother.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the study communication deals with all the means that the human beings
can pass information and incorporate both actions and feelings. Non-verbal ways of passing
information such as facial expressions are very critical in communication. In the film Pride and
Prejudice, the non- verbal communication apart from passing the required information, they are
also used to display the character’s feelings and the social norms and position.
