Your first assignment as the newly hired senior marketing manager for the California Gold Rush is to create the team’s “Theme Nights” for the first season! This is YOUR opportunity to be both creative and successful with the team’s marketing efforts! Remember, the SBJ is watching this team closely, because it IS the only new minor league baseball team in the US to be added this season!

Just as any new sport marketer should do, you will want to do your research…begin by reading about one of the latest and hottest developments in sport marketing on the SBJ website. You may also want to refer to the in-depth article about faith-based marketing called “Show a Little Faith” which highlights the developments of Third Coast Sports who packages and promotes Faith Nights for sports teams (see our Doc Sharing. You will also want to read over the section included in every SBJ which can be found one the website as well, called “Coast to Coast”. This section shares some of the latest and hottest developments in sport marketing as well!)

Your job (for this Unit’s Discussion) is create what you will believe will be a successful Theme Night for the California Gold Rush! You should be creating an ORIGINAL idea…not borrowing from someone or some other team’s marketing efforts.
When searching for the next best Theme Night in minor league baseball which you HOPE will be featured in the SBJ, you may want to consider what is popular in this area, consider your hobby, consider what is important to your family, consider the latest trends, consider all target populations, consider anything and everything you think would sell tickets! You will need to develop your idea in order for it to become successful, so be sure to follow the steps listed below and keep in mind what Mackie Feierstein, the senior marketing manager for the Miami Dolphins was quoted as saying in the article “Show a Little Faith”. He said, “I think that the bottom line when it comes to certain teams is that we’re all in the business of trying to sell tickets”! So go out there and do it!

Plan as if you were going into to your General Manager’s office to present this idea by following these steps and answering these questions:

What is the name of your Theme Night? Make it catchy!
How did you develop this idea?
Why do you think this will be a successful Theme Night? Jazz it up – really sell it to the GM
What research did you do to decide that this would be a successful Theme Night for OUR team – the California Gold Rush? Of course, you know not every idea works for every team in every part of the country!
What three local organizations would you market this Theme Night to and why? (Document your research related to these three local organizations.)
What three local businesses would you ask to sponsor the event and why? (Document your research related to these three local businesses.)
What will your game day promotion be? Be creative and have fun with this!
Convince the GM (me!) that your idea will be a HUGE success because of your PASSION…even though it may be a little bit off the wall! (Our team…and therefore, our money, is make believe after all, so we have NOTHING TO LOSE! That is what makes this so fun! Ha!)
