Polishing your writing skills:
The use of “signal phrases” in your writing is
important to identify for the reader what specific material is being attributed
to the source. See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/
In the following example the “signal phrase” appears in
italics (though it would appear in standard text in your writing).
According to Wild and Wild (2014) Note: the page number follows at the end of
the sentence inside parenthesis and before the final period (p. XXX).
When only a parenthetical citation at the end of the
sentence or the paragraph is provided, it can be unclear as to what material is
being attributed to the resource, unless it is a direct quote, in which case,
the quotation marks indicate the exact text being attributed.
When you begin the sentence with the author and date
According to Jones (2007) (or some similar signal phrase) and close it with the
page number, you make it clear what material is being attributed to the source.
This “polishes” your writing.
Other common signal phrases:
Wild and Wild (2014) observed
Wild and Wild (2014 noted
Wild and Wild (2014) suggested
Wild and Wild (2014) reasoned
Wild and Wild (2014) addressed
Some additional examples include:
acknowledged
commented pointed out
added
contended reported
admitted declared stated
agreed
described summarized
argued
emphasized wrote
asserted noted
claimed observed
