The Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for enforcing the Privacy
and Security rules. The Privacy Rule known as (HIPPA) Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act was enforced on April 14, 2005 for all HIPPA covered healthcare entities
(HIPAA Compliance and Enforcement, 2008). HIPAA requires the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services to implement standards regarding the electronic exchanges, privacy, and
security of health information. Together, these three sets of regulations are known as the
& quot;Administrative Simplification" provisions of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act, 2016). HIPPA enforces the protection of privacy by auditing healthcare
professionals and healthcare facilities by handing out penalties fees for noncompliance. HIPAA
Privacy Rule sets the standards in respect to the rights of patients and their healthcare
information, actions for exercising those rights, the authorization, any required uses of
information and the disclosure of information. The Office for Civil Rights enforcement actions
has received momentous results, in which HIPPA have improved the practice of privacy for
covered healthcare entities. Corrective actions that are recognized by the Office for Civil Rights
for covered healthcare entities have resulted in efficient and effective changes that have
improved the Privacy Protection. The Department of Health and Human Services Privacy Officer
is accountable for the execution of HIPAA procedures, protocols, and policies required by both
federal and state laws. The Privacy Officer also investigates, monitors, and reviews activities
within the Department of Health and Human Services to give surety of compliance with HIPAA
(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, 2016). Reference:
