a)
The nature of the assignment.
This is an individual assignment. Please follow the instructions closely as
outlined in this document. The marks scored for this assignment comprise the
100% assessment for this module. You should word process your work.
b)
Learning outcomes and criteria for assessment.
The following learning outcomes will be assessed in this assignment:
1. Knowledge & understanding: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding
of well established theories and issues relating to organisational structure
and culture and the use of resources and capabilities by organizations to
create value.
2. Analysis, problem-solving & application: Demonstrate ability to analyse and
apply business theories, models and frameworks to manage organizations
strategically.
3. Enquiry & communication: Communicate information, arguments and
conclusions effectively mainly in a written work assignment.

c) Assignment guidelines.
1. Your presentation should be logical and coherent, such that the assignment
flows.
2. The work should be concise and relevant and the meaning should be clear.
3. Analysis of case study material: you must show evidence of ability to
interpret and deduce relevant data and information.
4. Effective presentation of the assignment. This also means that the work
must be word-processed. It should be neat and demonstrate conventional
English spelling and grammar.
5. Sources of information/quotations used in the work should be properly
referenced using the Harvard method, as per the guidelines given.
6. Use relevant academic text and at least five (5) journal articles to support
and justify your arguments. These literature sources should be in the
reference list in the report.
7. Your analysis should draw on relevant theories, models and frameworks.
You should use academic theory to demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of the questions. Credit will be given primarily for critical
analysis and creativity, rather than straightforward description.
d) Assessment criteria.
The highest grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate the
following: clear knowledge of the main concepts, terminology and principles
covered in this module and an ability to apply these to the assignment
questions. Subtle and thoughtful observations will score well, as will the
provision of suitable data in the essay answers.
A pass grade will be awarded to students who demonstrate some knowledge
of the main concepts and principles covered in the module, but who tend to
offer cryptic or shallow responses, where it is difficult to follow their reasoning
and thought processes.
Students who ignore or misunderstand basic concepts and principles in the
module are likely to fail this assessment, as are students who do not follow the
assessment instructions.
1. To gain a mark of 70% or over: excellent performance in this assignment.
The work must meet all criteria shown in notes and guidelines to an
excellent standard. The work will demonstrate a very wide range of
reading, research, critical thought and analysis, and a very good
understanding of topics and their implications. Use of many examples, data
and information in support of your ideas and concepts is demonstrated.
2. To gain a mark of 60-69%: good performance in this assignment.
The work must meet all criteria shown in notes and guidelines to a good
standard. The work will demonstrate a wider range than average of
reading and research, some critical thought, analysis, and clear
understanding of topics and their implications. Use of examples, data and
information in support of your ideas and concepts is demonstrated.
3. To gain a mark of 50-59%: Average performance in this assignment.

The work must meet all criteria shown in notes and guidelines to a fair
standard. The work will demonstrate a larger range of reading than that
given for a pass, research, some demonstration of analytical thought, and
an understanding of topics and their implications. Use of some examples,
data and information in support of your ideas and concepts is
demonstrated.
4. To gain a mark of 40-49%: Pass rate performance in this assignment.
The work must meet all criteria shown in notes and guidelines to a minimal
standard. The work will demonstrate an acceptable range of reading and
some research, an attempt at critical thought and analysis, but with a
limited understanding of topics and their implications.
5. 0-39 % Fail: Assignment performance that does not meet requirements for
a pass.
The work does not meet the guidelines shown above and fails to
demonstrate any understanding. The range of reading is minimal and there
is no evidence of research, thought and analysis.
Work handed in after the deadline will be labelled ‘Late’ and marked at zero.
e)
Assignment submission.
The Examination Section must receive your work by 4:00 pm at the
appointed date. It will, of course, be accepted at an earlier date, but late
submissions will not be awarded a mark unless you successfully make a claim
under the extenuating circumstances procedure (see SU Student Handbook).
f)
Submission arrangements.
You must hand in one copy of your assignment, stapled to a completed
Assignment Attachment form which is available at the Academic Support Unit.
Submission is at the counter of the Examination Section. During normal office
hours, staff will be available to receive these assignments. You are strongly
advised to keep at least a photocopy or a copy of this assignment on
disk.
g)
Penalties.
Plagiarism will be severely penalised. The University publishes a fully
detailed description of what the term plagiarism means on the
University website. Unless your claim of extenuating circumstances is
upheld, late submission will not be marked and zero mark will be
awarded.
A sliding scale of penalties for excess length will be imposed
according to the amount by which the limit has been exceeded :
1-10% excess
11-20% excess
21-30% excess
31%+ excess
no penalty
10% reduction in the mark
20% reduction in the mark
the work will be capped at a pass i.e. 40%

Case Study Assignment
Answer ALL the following questions with reference to the case. Your analysis
should draw on relevant theories, models and frameworks related to Managing
Organisations. You should use academic theories to demonstrate your knowledge
in answering the questions. Credit will be given primarily for critical analysis and
