The center of literacy and Social Community Action – Ontario (CLISCO) was created in 2000 to help the youth from minority racial or ethnic groups in Ottawa to better flourish in the areas of learning and to also enjoy community life.

The CLISCO is a non-profit organization with a mandate focused on strengthening the socio-economic skills of youth and community members of racial and ethnocultural minorities in Ottawa.

The project for which we need funding is entitled “Peace out”. It is a community development project by youth and for youth to reduce crime and antisocial behavior among young people from minority racial or ethnic groups living in the region Vanier / Lowertown in Ottawa. The activities of this project include:

  1. the creation of a steering committee for project supervision;
  2. participatory research including interviews and study groups involving hundreds of young (13 to 17) about their understanding of the root causes of crime. The results of the study will be compiled and presented to three study groups, the first consisting of young people, the second adult women and the third of adult men, who will discuss and find possible solutions to the main problems affecting area youth.
  3. Participants in the study group will be trained to conduct workshops throughout the community, which aim to promote awareness and community participation in the project. This project includes leadership training and workshops on self-esteem.

The goal of all these activities will lead to the development of an action plan to reduce youth crime.
