Discussion #2: Will I Compromise My Ethics?
After reading and viewing the material for the session on
ethics, you should have a clear idea of what your own personal code of ethics
is. Ideally your code of ethics should match the code of ethics that your
profession and company/business/organization has. To a great degree these codes
do reflect the broader ethical standards that are a part of the culture in
which you live. (FYI- It will be much easier for you to respond to this
DISCUSSION if you read the lectures on ethics and values and view the PP on
Bounded Ethicality, Week Four materials.)
If you were to be sent to another country to work for a
period of time, where the cultural ethical standards were very different from
yours, —
How willing would you be to “go along” with the
ethical standards of that culture?
In other words — is there a line that you would not cross
in terms of ethical behavior?
Can you say right now what that “line” would be,
and why? Provide specific and realistic examples of what you would not be
willing to do. Do not simply say – I would not lie or cheat or condone harm to
others. Be specific. For example – if the culture operated on a bribery system
whereby getting services required a little cash under the table – would you do
it? This is simply an example – do not necessarily use this example for your
response.
Give an example of your behavior in some situation where you
feel your ethics were challenged and you did act ethically.
Have you witnessed ethical misconduct at work? What, was it
and did you do anything about it?

working on your first Homework Assignment — but see if you can take time to
read ahead and start posting in the discussion. As usual you are encouraged to
participate early in the week in this discussion. Make it a genuine discussion,

presentation of your beliefs. However, it is important that you base it on the
ethical theories presented in this Module. Outside sources may not be
necessary.
