How many new products can you identify? Visit the supermarket this week and complete the following tasks:
1. Make a list of at least 15 items with the word “New” on the label.
2. Include on your list anything that looks like a new product.
3. Next to each item on your list, write the category of new product that best describes the item. The categories are found on pages 191-192 of the textbook in Chapter 11 and they are as follows:
a) New-to-World Products (discontinuous Innovations);
b) New Product Lines
c) Additions to Existing Product Lines
d) Improvements or Revisions of Existing Products
e) Re-positioned Products
f) Lower-Priced Products
Share your results with the class and provide a brief summary of your experience.
Note: In the supermarket, it is likely that most of the products that you see will be either Additions to Existing Product Lines or Improvements/Revisions of Existing Products. One note is that the word “New” can legally appear on a new product for about six months.
