Week 9. Motivation

This week’s PowerPoint lecture is about motivation. As you can see, there are many perspectives
on what constitutes motivation and how to engage it.

Most likely you can imagine many examples of
motivating. If you watched any of the
multiple big sports championships over these past weeks, you saw the coaches
preparing their teams. High stakes in
the sports world and for host city, team, and fan (i.e. those who pay the
salaries) pride. Yet, in some ways this
is easier than the task you face as a healthcare administrator. Sports teams have a shared goal (no pun
intended), a common language and lexicon, and finite circumstances.

In healthcare, the team is comprised of multiple constituencies,
some of which are organizationally separate (e.g., typically the hospital and
medical staffs are two independent entities).
As has been discussed this past week, patients come from many
backgrounds, with diverse beliefs and myriad expectations. Navigating that environment take a different
set of skills.

Week 9.1: Getting
everyone onboard

We are going to continue our discussion from last week about
teams with a twist – Now we are looking at our OWN Team and our OWN behavior.

The first line of thinking is directed to those team members
who may be participating in the Team Project, but are not fully motivated to
help create a truly great Paper and Presentation.

The second line of thinking is directed at those that, while
assigned to a team, have not yet made a meaningful contribution – or maybe not
even started to be a team member.

So, with either or both of these situations in mind, here are
this week’s questions:

1, Are all members of your Team fully on-board with a plan
for doing a great job on the final report and presentation? What are you doing
to motivate full engagement in the project by all members of your Team?

2. Are any of your Team member not participating at all? If
so what are you doing about that?

3. In addition to participation issues, what other
challenges and problems are you running into with your Team and what are you
doing to resolve them so that your Project and Presentation is excellent?

4. Are you using any of your strategies and ideas about
communication and teamwork presented in the readings or in the prior Discussion
Board with your actual Team?

In general – Do not use any of the names of any of your Team
members in this discussion.
