Ethical Dilemma

OFFICE SIMULATION

0
You are the administrative assistant in the human resources office. There
is a job opening for a sales representative for the company and the
application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28. There were a number
of applications/resumes that were received right as you were leaving the
office on Friday evening, and it is your job to enter all of the applications
into the system that the search committee will use to determine the
applicant pool. You put all of the applications that were received by the
deadline into a file in your desk drawer so that you know that the file is
complete as of 5:00 p.m.
You have dinner with family on Friday evening and your brother-in-law
pulls you aside and hands you his application packet for the sales position.
He says that he knows the deadline was 5:00 p.m., but since he knew he
was going to see you that evening he thought he would just hand deliver it
to you instead of driving across town to deliver it to you. He knows that it is
your responsibility to enter all of the applications.
1. Would you include your brother-in-law s resume in the applicant pool?
2. Does it make a difference that he would be perfect for the position? He
would be screened with all of the other eligible applicants, you would not
bring his application to the attention of the committee or have any influence
with the screening committee.
3. He has been out of work for more than 6 months and he has a family of
four to take care of financially. He is a hard worker, and you know he has
been diligently looking for work. Does that information factor in to your
decision?
4. The job was only posted for one week and he was very busy with family
obligations throughout the week. He was not being lazy by not bringing the
application to the office; he really thought it would be okay to give it to you
when he saw you Friday night. What do you say to him?
