Each student will prepare a case analysis of a famous or historic labor/management dispute. The paper must include a cover page and a reference page. Also, at the minimum, the project will contain the following elements:

  • A discussion the company’s management and its history
  • A discussion of the union, its history and its history with management (the company)
  • A discussion of any prior work stoppages
  • A discussion of the events leading up to the current confrontation. Were there any negotiations? Was there violence? Was the government involved?
  • A discussion of the position of the company. What were its demands?
  • A discussion of the position of the union. What were their demands?
  • A discussion of the negotiations. Did the breakdown and why?
  • A discussion of the work stoppage itself. Was there violence? How long did it last?
  • What was the resolution of the conflict? Discuss concessions made by both sides and a comparison with the original demands.
  • Your opinion as to whether there was a winner and a loser.
  • Are there any lingering issues or concerns

This 5-7 page (not including title page, appendices, and references) paper must be written in strict accordance with APA writing style. I pay particular note to referencing and plagiarism. I strongly suggest you research various websites like the Webster website and the Purdue Online writing Laboratory to gain further knowledge as to what constitutes plagiarism. In addition your paper must contain no more than 10% direct quotations. If you turn in a paper that does not adhere to the APA referencing and plagiarism guidelines and my quotation guidelines you may receive a grade of zero for the assignment.
