Country Assessment Assignment

This assignment is designed to provide students with an opportunity to look into two countries from a perspective of determining their potential as a player in the global economy. What kind of producer might the country be (or become)? What kind of consumer might the country be (or become)?

Each student will choose two countries from the list below by selecting no more than one country from each of the three stages of economic development based on the Global Competitive Index from the World Economic Forum and no more than one country from each geographic area (Africa and Middle East, Americas, Asia and Pacific Islands, and Europe). A list of countries in each stage of development and each region is provided below. The selection was based on the country’s inclusion on the list of countries included in the World Economic Forum studies of Global Competitiveness for 2012-2013. The Report identifies three stages (1, 2, and 3) and two transitional stages (one between stage 1 and Stage 2 and a second one between Stage 2 and Stage 3). The instructor has combined the countries in the transitional stages with the three stages to try to provide some balance in the overall numbers in the three lists based on economic development. The geographic placement of some countries may be somewhat arbitrary, but hopefully students will be able to get some variety among developed, developing, and third world economies with their selections.

For their report, students will want to consider a variety of economic, political/legal, social/cultural/education, and technological factors. Other information such as history and geography might be important. Information can be found in a variety of sources. Web sites for several sources are listed below.

Economic issues would include the stability of the economic, the nature of the economy (agricultural, industrial, service), inflation rates, family income levels, gross domestic product, etc. Legal issues would include the type and stability of the government, extent to which laws are favorable to business, etc. Social and related issues would include general education levels (literacy rate, high school graduation rates), demographics of the population, health and related issues, religion and other values orientations, etc. Technological factors would include availability of and adoption rates of various technologies. Many American students have traveled little to other countries, so little is known about the rest of the world. Hopefully, this exercise will provide some introduction for students.

Two sources that may be particularly beneficial are The World Factbook prepared by the CIA and the Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum. Some materials from these sources may be found at their websites (see below). Students may also find some information in World Almanacs, Global Edge (at Michigan State University), The Heritage Foundation, and other sources. The Global Competitiveness Report has a two-page Country/Economy Profiles for each country. The web sites listed below are from the current year, but provide collective information and rankings.

Important requirement: Student selections of countries will be limited to two or three students per country. This will help to provide a variety of countries that will be reviewed in the course. Assignments of the countries will be made on a first in, first out basis. I will post a list of selected firms as an announcement on the main course page every day or two for a few days, until most students have made their selections. Essentially, students should make sure to include no more than one country from each column listed below (regions) and no more than one country from each row list (stages of economic development).

After the papers are due, discussion topics will be opened for class discussion. For the discussions about the countries from the student country analysis, papers will be made available for the entire class to have access for review after the due date for the student papers.

A question that is frequently asked about the written assignments in this class is how long should they be. This partly depends on some formatting issues and generally, how the student writes. However, the paper should not exceed 15 pages. I have had some good and some not -so-good papers that are eight to twelve pages. Likewise, I have had some good and some not-so-good papers that were 18 to twenty pages. I have not had many good papers that were less than four to five pages. Longer is not necessarily better; better is better.
