Week 3 Class Discussion
In 2002, more than 1,200 babies were born
in prison. In some jurisdictions, these children can live in their parents’
cells till they reach six years of age. These children pose unique challenges
for a corrections system designed for incarceration and some argue that their
presence is inconsistent with the message of punishment for wrongdoers. Others
argue children can help rehabilitate female prisoners and cutting ties between
mother and newborn is cruel.
