Read the Discussion Participation Scoring Guide to learn how the instructor will evaluate your discussion participation throughout this course.

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Analyze relevant global leadership concerns for the future.

Activity Instructions

In this discussion, you will gain experience in analyzing the shaping and driving forces that impact the development of new leadership agendas.

In The New Competition for Global Resources, a special report from Boston Consulting Group and Knowledge@Wharton, the threat driving new understandings about the global future, leadership, and competition was defined as “the need to compete with everyone, from everywhere, for everything” (2008, p.18). Using the case study PepsiCo India: On Road to Sustainable Development?, define how the shaping and driving forces that PepsiCo experienced in India impacted its leadership agenda. In particular, address whether the impact of the forces merely created leadership recognition that situations needed to be fixed or contained in order for the firm to penetrate further into the Indian consumer market, or whether the impact of the forces created a reorientation of the leadership agenda as the PepsiCo mindset changed because of learning about and exploring a complex set of concerns for the future.

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In replies to your colleagues, analyze the risks PepsiCo leadership assumed for whichever path your colleagues suggested it could take, given the impact of shaping and driving forces. What factors do you see in your colleagues’ posts that define specifically the risks that could impact the sustainability of the firm? Given those risks to sustainability, do you agree or disagree with your colleagues?

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Analyze relevant global leadership concerns for the future.

Activity Instructions

In this discussion, you will gain experience in evaluating Gardner’s “five minds”as guides to addressing future agendas held by today’s global leaders.

In the world of global talent and leadership, define which one or two minds are crucial to the solution of PepsiCo’s dilemma in India. Defend your choice with information in the case study, in Gardner’s article, or in more current articles you are able to find about PepsiCo’s presence in Asia.

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In your responses to others, dig deeper into the evidence to see whether other choices from the five minds (disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, or ethical) are more appropriate than yours.

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Analyze emerging leadership theories that are appropriate for a global agenda.

Activity Instructions

In this discussion, you will gain experience in articulating a particular leadership theory and evaluating a rationale for using it as a guide to enact a leadership agenda.

Using either Scharmer’s or Pless and Maak’s article as a guide, analyze the ability of the top leadership team at PepsiCo to recognize and change the way they had responded in the past to the pesticide and water contamination issues. Take a stance on whether Nooyi and the top leadership team at PepsiCo exhibited the capacity to align Gardner’s five minds toward finding new solutions to these issues.

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In your responses, extend the discussion by suggesting at least one more emerging leadership theory that might better guide an analysis of Nooyi and the top leadership team’s approach to resolving the scandals and ill will in India. Make sure to provide a rationale for the theory as a guide to enacting Nooyi’s leadership agenda.

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Evaluate the leader’s responsibility to prepare the self for work in a competitive, complex, and diverse workplace.

Activity Instructions

In order to prepare one’s self to be a true leader in the global arena, individuals must know how they measure up with respect to the level of their leadership competencies. The intent of this discussion is to allow you as an individual to identify how you “measure up” to Gardner’s five minds.

In an open and honest discussion, create a list of your level of competency (strengths and areas to improve on) with respect to each of the five minds listed below. Provide your thoughts on ways to further develop and improve your five minds. Also, remember to provide examples and linkage to the course concepts in your discussion. Address your competency regarding the following:

  1. The disciplined mind: The ability to delve deep that is associated with expertise in a certain field of scholarship or the professions.
  2. The synthesizing mind: The ability to pick and choose among an array of information from several disciplines so that the resulting explanation makes sense.
  3. The creating mind: The ability to go beyond existing knowledge to forge new ground, “pose new questions, offer new solutions” (Gardner, 2006, p. 156).
  4. The respectful mind: The ability to appreciate and welcome all forms of diversity.
  5. The ethical mind: The ability to seek both good work and good citizenship.

Note: This discussion activity will also help you to develop your final course project.

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In responses to your colleagues, find and analyze the similarities and differences between your findings and theirs.

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Evaluate the leader’s responsibility to prepare the self for work in a competitive, complex, and diverse workplace.

Activity Instructions

This discussion will help you build skill in evaluating the interdependent variables that impact the value and trajectory of global leadership development programs in terms of their effectiveness in fostering deep self-awareness and growth as well as cultural intelligence and nonlinear systems thinking. Part of the evaluation will involve the sets of interdependent variables that are built into the paths that enhance skills for global leaders.

Revisit PepsiCo’s leadership development program, and evaluate its capacity to foster the “leading from behind” skills (“Where Will We Find Tomorrow’s Leaders?,” 2008, p. 126). Look specifically at variables such as cultural intelligence, nonlinear systems thinking, self-awareness, and growth. Include answers to the following questions in your post:

  • Does the PepsiCo program challenge existing assumptions about what leaders should be in such a way as to empower a more self-directed and self-selected leadership development trajectory or process?
  • Does the program support an outside-in or an inside-out focus (imposed or self-generated)?
  • Does the PepsiCo program foster the capacity to support the personal growth of self and others in a nonlinear, multi-minded system?
  • Does the program develop cultural intelligence?

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In your responses to your colleagues, analyze the implications of the PepsiCo program in regard to whether the assessment of the variables presented by colleagues actually develops the self as you would wish the self to evolve as a global leader.

Activity Context

This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:

  • Analyze relevant global leadership concerns for the future.

Activity Instructions

As you examine PepsiCo leadership at the end of the case study, analyze the prototyping, if any, the leadership is undertaking as a way to experiment with the future. Consider whether PepsiCo leadership is following Scharmer’s advice: “This means to prototype the new in order to explore the future by doing, to create a little landing strip of the future that allows for hands-on testing and experimentation” (2008, p. 56).

Response Guidelines

Respond to two of your peers. In replies to your colleagues, extend the discussion by exploring how PepsiCo’s prototyping, or lack thereof, will impact the company’s capacity to change itself and support the next generation of global leaders in their ongoing changes. Refer to any recent news articles pertaining to PepsiCo and this topic.

Activity Instructions

Post your Leadership Development Plan from Unit 5 to the discussion area.

Response Guidelines

After reading colleagues’ development plans, reply to at least two, using the following approach adapted from Scharmer (2008, p. 54). Complete and include each of the following statements regarding the different insights you experienced, based on your various levels of listening. You can certainly add some narrative to these replies. As a listener, you will evolve, and the feedback will help the presenter evolve.

  • Downloading – I downloaded the following information that reconfirmed what I already know: ___________.
  • Factual listening – I noticed something new I had not considered before: ___________.
  • Empathetic listening – I saw the following through my colleague’s eyes: ___________.
  • Generative listening – I really caught a glimpse of my best future self when: ___________.
