Research: Conducting Secondary Research [LO-3] Select any public company and find the following information.
a. Names of the company’s current officers
b. List of the company’s products or services (if the company has a large number of products, list the product lines instead)
c. Current issues in the company’s industry
d. Outlook for the company’s industry as a whole
Requirements!
This exercise asks you to select a “public” company. Be sure that you know what a “public” company is, or you will not answer this correctly. A “public” company is one that offers its stocks and bonds for sale on a public stock exchange. The Securities and Exchange Commission requires every public company to file a comprehensive Annual Report, and many companies post links to these reports on their websites. You should be able to find your exercise’s information in the Annual Report. The Management Letter portion of the Annual Report usually has the “industry” information. If you cannot find this information on your company’s website, you will need to select a different company in order to complete this exercise. I expect you to actually research a real public company. Fictitious information will not be accepted, and short generic statements will not be desirable. Following are the areas that I will be looking for:
- Prepare your Information Report in the Memo format, and organize by Category, (grouping by topical category, such as products, services, officers…).
- Start with a Statement of Purpose, (identify to your reader why you are writing this message).
- Use Headings
- Products/Services/Officers
- Current issues in the company’s industry
- Outlook for the company’s industry as a whole
- Sources of data collected
