Think back to that very first day of school and what
preparation you may have received prior to that. How does a parent truly get themselves and
their children ready for such a big transition?
Up until this point children have learned and relied on the routines of
life and taking care of many of their own needs as they have grown. Now with the advent of formal
education/training they must now adjust to the larger and more demanding world
while learning to create a social place for themselves with new peers.
While you are reading this chapter keep in mind this one
question, How do parents foster children’s success in this new stage of
development? Did your parents adequately
prepare you for this major transition?
If so how? If not, knowing what you know now what do you wish they would
have done differently?
