there are any “basic” human ethical principles. Terrorists find it ethical to kill innocent people in the name of some religious belief. Indeed, as far as I know, the terrorists do not interview each victim to determine what is in the victim’s heart and mind before executing them. What kind of ethics is this and where does it begin?

Medicine is full of ethical dilemmas. I was just reading about a lung cancer
screening tool that is available locally to persons who
“qualify.” Supposedly, the
screening is able to detect lung cancers very early and save lives. In order to qualify, they say one has to have
smoked at least a pack a day for at least 30 years and have no signs or
symptoms of cancer. I wonder if that means
that smoking 3/4 of pack a day for 29 years does not put one at risk for lung
cancer – I’m guessing not.
So how on earth does someone sit down and
decide who gets screened and who doesn’t?
By the way, if you pay for it out of pocket, they will screen anyone
regardless of whether they otherwise “qualify.”
