Module 1 – Case

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY & HRM

Case Assignment

(Signature Assignment: Information Literacy, Reinforced
Level)

In this Case 1 you will be finding, selecting, and
incorporating the most effective sources of information to support your
discussion of Atlantic Shrimp’s actions as they relate to discrimination laws
and regulations. Give special attention to the quality of sources utilized.

Exploring Equal Employment Opportunity and Discrimination

Before starting this assignment, use the following links to
familiarize yourself with relevant law:

Terms: Disparate/adverse impact; disparate/adverse treatment

U.S. Supreme Court Case: Griggs vs. Duke Power Company

Begin this assignment by reading the following scenario:

Atlantic Shrimp is a major processor of fresh and frozen
shrimp sold throughout the United States. Atlantic shrimp employs 301 workers
at its principal processing plant. The plant has a relatively young crew with
73% of the workforce between the ages of 23 and 31. The plant is in Savannah,
Georgia. Atlantic Shrimp requires a high school diploma or GED as a condition
of employment for its cleaning crew. Right now, the entire cleaning crew at
Atlantic Shrimp is Caucasian.

Prepare a 4- to 6-page paper, not counting the cover page,
the requested appendix, and reference page. Address the following questions in
your paper:

How would information about Savannah’s labor market be
important in considering whether or not Atlantic Shrimp is in compliance with
the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Discuss relevant data you find associated with
Savannah’s demographics.

Based on your readings and research, does Atlantic Shrimp
need to make policy changes to ensure compliance with Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964? Should there be changes to comply with the Age
Discrimination in Employment Act? If so, what changes should Atlantic Shrimp
make, and why are they necessary to comply with each of these important laws?

Use at least six (6) sources, at least four (4) of which
should be found on your own (outside of the module readings). Provide a 1- or
2-page Appendix discussing why your non-module sources (ones found on your own)
were chosen and what criteria you used to determine that they were appropriate
sources to utilize for your academic paper.

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in
the Case rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria:

Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects
of the assignment? Is the assignment addressed accurately and precisely using
sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements?

Critical Thinking: Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level
analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions,
and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the
formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic
with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?

Business Writing: Is the essay logical, well organized, and
well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for
graduate-level work? Are section headings included? Are paraphrasing and
synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding, or is
justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct
quotations?

Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate
that the student has read, understood, and can apply the background materials
for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research,
as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do
additional sources used provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do
they help in shaping the overall paper?

Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding
of APA Style of referencing by inclusion of proper citations (for paraphrased
text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references
used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research)
been included, and are these properly cited? Have all sources cited in the
paper been included on the References page?

Timeliness: Has the assignment been submitted to TLC
(Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date?

Case Assignment

You are an HR Manager for a large sheet metal manufacturing
company. One of your largest customers has just secured a major office
furniture contract with the federal government. Your customer wants your
company to become a subcontractor for the project, making all of the plastic
parts required. There is uncertainty among your organization’s top officials
about whether or not to become part of this project, even thought it would be
very lucrative. The disagreement centers around the preparation of an
affirmative action plan and the goal achievement requirements imposed to
correct underutilization.

Your paper of 4 to 5 pages (not including title page nor
reference page) should address the following questions:

What are the EEO compliance requirements that impact a
federal subcontractor?

What are the important components of an affirmative action
plan (expand on the goal-setting process)?

How should affirmative action goals relate to an
organization’s strategic human resources plan?

What would you recommend to your organization’s top
officials about becoming part of this project?

Use at least 5 library resources to help support and
strengthen your discussion. Please upload your paper by the module due date.

Recruitment of Females and Veterans of the U.S. Military

Before you begin this assignment, be sure to review the
Module 2 Background readings.

females. He also would like you to discuss the recruitment of military
veterans. Tailor your discussion as much as possible to recruiting these
targeted applicants to the large transport equipment industry.

Draw on your own research to identify (by name) real-life,
private-sector employers who have used some of the recruitment techniques that
you propose. Discuss their real-life experiences as examples in your news
release.

Use at least 2 Trident Online Library sources plus any applicable
background readings to help strengthen your discussion.

Prepare a 2- to 3-page paper (not counting the cover and
reference pages) that discusses how the Family and Medical Leave Act, the
Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, safety laws
or other state laws might apply to the following scenario.

One of your old college roommates, Sandra, is a nurse who
took a job that required her to be able to lift 50 pounds smoothly. She was
told the job had this physical strength requirement for patient safety and to
ensure that teams of nurses could move patients as needed. Sandra worked for a
nursing home chain that employed 900 employees. Sandra had become pregnant and
on her doctor’s advice tried to refrain from lifting 50 pounds. After she kept
finding herself in situations at work that required her to do this kind of
lifting, she decided to just stay home until the baby was born. After the baby
was born, Sandra went back to work, but her baby developed a medical condition
that required her to see doctor’s frequently. Sandra didn’t have anyone else
who could be a “dedicated” caregiver for her baby, so she took leave from work
to tend to her child. When her leave was about to expire, she got her
daughter’s doctor to write a note in support of extending her leave. The note
wasn’t clear and suggested that the doctor thought it would be nice, but not
necessary, for mother and child to be together. Sandra’s manager told her that
the nursing home wouldn’t be able to keep her job open for her any longer.
However, he told her she should apply to the company again as a new-hire when
she was ready to get back to work.
