Week 5 discussion
Actions for Week 5: Discussion of Employment-Related Legal
or Ethical Issues (15%)
Policy: Focus: Managing employment-related legal and ethical
issues
Course Objective #5
MBA Program Competencies: Ethical leadership, Valuing
diverse perspectives
Submit your initial posting by midnight on Sunday of week 5
and complete all assignment requirements/responses by the end of this week.
1. Select the HR legal/ethical issue of interest to you from
the list provided. Once you make your selection check in the week five
discussion area to make sure someone else has not already selected the topic.
If your topic is still available post a response to the week five discussion
with your name and the issue in the title. This lets your colleagues know you
have selected the topic and that it is therefore no longer available. This is
important because only one person is permitted to work on each topic.
2. By midnight on Sunday, post a succinct (maximum 800 word)
easy-to-read summary report on your approved issue. Post this as a response to
the posting you created in step 1. Please use the following format (using these
section headings and order will help everyone find the comparable information
for each topic easily):
Summary of Law: Brief description of the law or issue (and
who is affected/covered by it), using simple language and your own words.
Relevance & Importance: Well supported explanation of how
and why this legal issue is important for you and your colleagues as current or
future managers.
Ethical Challenge(s): Brief discussion of at least one
potential ethical concern associated with this law or legal issue, beginning
with your definition of what an ethical challenge is. Follow this with an
explanation of how and why the example you give constitutes an ethical
challenge, a critical analysis of alternative approaches, and an explanation of
what you would do and why.
Practical Implications: Analysis of the implications for
managers/leaders and their organizations if the law or legal issue is not
adequately understood, prevented and/or properly managed. Include here issues
related to trust as well as any specific implications for your particular industry
and or functional area, if applicable.
Recommendations for Managers: A set of well supported
practical recommendations you can use yourself or give to a new manager. Each
recommendation must be derived from your earlier discussion. Apply ethical decision
approaches as appropriate. For a very brief summary of the latter see Robbins
and Judge (2016) page. 99. Refer also to the approaches you learned and
practiced in AMBA 610.
Suggested Resources: Reliable resources managers might
consult should they confront this issue. This might include journal articles
and government documents or Websites.
3. By the end of week
five post a minimum of two substantive responses to a colleague’s report and
respond to all questions you are asked about the legal issue for which you are
responsible. Be sure to undertake the necessary research to post meaningful
responses that will enhance participants’ understanding of the managerial
challenges associated with these legal/ethical issues and that will facilitate
an informed critical analysis of feasible solutions. Avoid posting opinions and
stories about your personal experiences and instead focus on ideas and
challenges discussed by those who have studied and written about these issues.
