Discussion 1
Module 1 Discussion Question 1
The course textbook is not required for this discussion. ALL
students are expected to participate in the discussion during the week of
Module 1.
Please DO NOT use attachments as this is inconvenient and
cumbersome for viewing.
Please label your responses in your initial posting so it is
clear which comments are intended for each part of the discussion.
Please use your last name in the subject line of your
initial posting, e.g. Flintstone Module 1. Please use size 2 font for ease of
viewing.
I will post several follow up questions during the week as
the discussion unfolds. Please choose one (or more) of the follow up questions
to respond to in addition to responding to two of your classmates.
For background information, you are encouraged to view the
specific segments of a PBS production listed below:
“Is Wal-Mart Good for America?”
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/walmart/view/
(You have to click on the individual segments; they do not
have separate URLs)
“The strategy: Low Costs & Go Global”
(Approximately 10 minutes.)
“China’s View of Wal-Mart-Big Partner”
(Approximately 12 minutes.)
“Taking the Hits” (Approximately 16 minutes.)
1. Should large chain stores continue to purchase products
manufactured overseas? Why or why not?
2. It this a good business practice? Why or why not?
3. Identify and discuss one idea from the PBS story that
particularly caught your attention.
4. An abbreviated version of Saint Leo’s Academic Honor Code
is provided on the course website on the “Policies and Information”
page (accessible via the left menu). Please take a minute to review the policy
now. Four categories of academic misconduct are mentioned. Choose one of the
categories. Identify the category you have chosen and share an interesting idea
about that category (maybe something that surprised you, something that caught
your attention or something you might think your classmates might inadvertently
overlook).
Note the following:
Given this extensive discussion on Walmart, no research
paper topic on Walmart will be approved.
The response for each ‘question’ is to be a minimum of 1
paragraph long with 3-6 sentences per paragraph in length. (Short sentences or
sentences that do not add to the topic discussion do not count toward the
minimum.)
To receive full credit for this topic, you must also comment
on the postings of two classmates. The response is to be a minimum of 1
paragraph long with 3-6 sentences per paragraph in length. (Short sentences or
sentences that do not add to the topic discussion, such as, “Great
post!” do not count toward the minimum.)
Read the Discussion Guidelines before you post your
comments.
All work submitted for this course is subject to Saint Leo’s
Honor Code. Identify sources and use quotation marks, as necessary, to identify
material borrowed from sources.
