What I need is like this —> A tourist’s main motivation on vacation is maximization of utility, meaning they want to get the most benefit out of everything they do while away. It is a very self-regarding mind-frame. A free rider is somebody who benefits from a resource, good, or service without paying for the benefit. Therefore, it leads to degradation of common pool resources. According to Haley (1994), “’resource protection is also hindered by the lack of incentive for investment in a resource where ‘free-riders’ may enjoy the benefits of use and there is no assurance that the returns on any investment will be captured by the investor’” (Holden, 2008). Many of these resources include benefits for groups of people including recreational value, scientific study, historical significance, religious importance, and cultural significance. These unique values can influence a conservation effort (Holden 2008).
