Discussion 1
Review the City of Chicago’s sustainability plan, “Sustainable Chicago 2015”
at
http://www.cityofchicago.org/content/dam/city/progs/env/SustainableChicago2
015.pdf. Evaluate the plan to determine if it is a “ comprehensive portfolio”
that includes the elements described by Young and Dhanda on p. 294 of your
text:
1 comprehensive water agenda;
2 efforts to utilize alternative energy;
3 public transportation agenda and alternative fuel vehicles;
4 urban forestry to promote tree coverage;
5 health and safety network for citizens;
6 efforts to improve air quality;
7 complete recycling program;
8 promotion of open spaces, parks and trails;
9 market for locally and organically produced food.
Then choose one of the nine elements described aove and discuss the plan’s
specific, measureable goals for that area and how the city aims to achieve
them.
Discussion 2
Greenwashing, which means making unsubstantiated claims in order to
appear sustainable, is a serious problem that breeds distrust and cynicism. “
The Seven Sins of Greenwashing,” developed by TerraChoice, a consulting
firm owned by Underwriters Laboratory, describes seven ways in which
companies can mislead customers about the sustainable attributes of a
product or service
(http://sinsofgreenwashing.org/findings/the-seven-sins/index.html). Using the
“Seven Sins” as a guide, research one example of greenwashing in the
hospitality industry. For fun, play “Name that Sin” on the TerraChoice website:
