In week 10 (7th of December 2016) we will be discussing Managing Strategy
(Chapter 8).
In order to have a fruitful session you all need to come prepared. What you need to do for week 10?
1. You need to read and analyse the Part 2 of the BP Case Study, pages
162 to 165.
2. Answer the list of questions prior to the session.
3. Bring 2 printed copied of your answers with you.
At the session, your preparation and participation will be graded! So do not
miss this session!

Step 4: Download the book and print pages 162 to 165. List of questions you need to answer based on the case study:
Question 1: Identify two or three strategic moves made by the company, and
write a brief note of each.
Question 2: Can you find evidence to show which of the three perspectives
on strategy they used- planning, learning or political?
Question 3: On reflection, does that seem to have been the best method for
the situation?
Question 4: Consider which of the Porter’s Five Forces are likely to be
affecting BP most seriously. Do they represent threats or

Question 5. Construct a PESTEL analysis to establish the main aspects of the
environment that affect BP.
Question 6: Carry out an internal analysis based on the information given in
the case study. More information about how to carry out an
internal analysis you can find at page 245.
Question 7: Identify what strategic issues BP is facing. What do you suggest
BP should do to avoid such issues in the future? Bring arguments
for your suggestions. Question 8 will be done in class: Compare your answers with other
students on your course, and try to identify any common
or contrasting themes.
You need to bring with you two printed copies of your answers! One for yourself
when you do Question 4 with your colleagues, and one for the teaching team!
The printed answers will be taken into account in your Class preparation, participation and
contribution (individual) assessment. No two answers should be the same. If any two answers are the same, both
of the students will be scored zero (0).
Remember! Preparation, class participation and contribution
(individual) account for 30% of your final grade.
