What motivates people? Why are people motivated? What motivates you on the job? Is it the same thing that motivates your peers? Why does a person go through all the scrutiny and open their lives to the public to run for public office? Why did Joe Gibbs return to the NFL after already winning the Super Bowl a couple of times and having a huge success as a NASCAR owner to again coach the Washington Redskins? Why do these people do this? For money? For power? For achievement? For self-satisfaction?
Our author states that the study of motivation assists leaders to understand what prompts people to innate action.

Young_Manager.jpgDo we come across as “real” or “fake? Can
you spot the fake smile? As the video demonstrated and our text pointed out,
many people communicate all the time without saying a word, but with their
facial expressions, body language, and actions.
Take this survey at Surveymonkey.com, Spot the Fake Smile
(originally presented by BBC – Science: Human Body & Mind).
Are you surprised about the results, or were you able to
distinguish the genuine from the fakes?
Post how well you did in the discussion and comment on at
least two of your peers’ results.

For a leader to create a motivating entrepreneur work environment, he or she must be able to influence (definition of leadership), and consequently, communications becomes a primary way for a leader to influence others. Developing “listening” skills is vital to effective communication on any level.
Ken Blanchard, leadership author, states: “If God had wanted us to talk more than listen; He would have given us two mouths rather than two ears”. This is a very good point!
Good companies have a reputation for listening to their people. Chili’s restaurant’s, where almost 80 percent of its menu has come from suggestions made by their unit managers, is rated as one of the nation’s top food service chains. What you learn from such examples is that when you listen to others, your organization will never suffer for ideas. That is one of your learning outcomes in this course: establishing an entrepreneurial work environment.
Leadership at Work:
At the end of Chapter 9, read the exercise, Leadership at Work: Listen like a Professional. Do the exercise with another individual. It can be anyone, a co-worker, family member, friend, or total stranger (everyone wants a true listener). When doing this exercise, concentrate, it is harder than it looks. Do not make the other person uncomfortable by being too intent.
- List your thoughts on how the other person responded to you when they realized you were really listening.
- What about you? Were you more connected to the person? Did the concentration on listening enhance your experience?
- How can you use this skill to shape your entrepreneurial leadership styles?
