Application 3
Looking Within to Produce Without
You may want to familiarize yourself with the MSL Application Rubric Weeks 1–5 before you begin this
Application Assignment, and then refer to it as needed throughout the week. The rubric is located in
the Rubrics area in the left navigation bar. Read Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee (2001), "Primal Leadership: The Hidden Driver of Great
Performance;" and Quinn (2005), "Moments of Greatness: Entering the Fundamental State of
Leadership."
Complete the assessment in Quinn (2005, p. 79) and, using what you have learned in this week’s
Discussion, write a brief 2- to 3-page paper and describe how you are informed by Goleman et al. (2001)
and Quinn (2005). Further, describe how you function as a leader today and what you need to do to be a
better leader in the future.
The state of mind and behavior of the leader impacts group productivity. The leader’s emotional state
can have unforeseen consequences on behavior when the leader is unaware of how she or he is being
perceived by followers. Therefore, leaders have to continuously monitor their own emotional states. In
order to produce maximum results for their organizations leaders also have to perform at their optimum
levels, or what Quinn (2005) calls "the fundamental state.”
Describe the leadership patterns in your current or previous organization and how you have responded
to those patterns as a “ follower.” Understanding that leader behaviors impact productivity, and if you
could share with your boss how you would like her or him to change so that you would become more
productive, what would you tell her or him?
