Shared ActivitiesRequiredShared Activity: Evaluation of Ethical and Legal Practices

A number of threats have been discussed in this unit that pertain to security and risk. Related to this is the matter of ethical and legal implications. IS technology touches nearly every aspect and functional area of an organisation but, in doing so, can also create many dilemmas. For example, the ease, speed, and efficiency of accessing electronic information require organisations, end users, employees, and customers to confront myriad issues related to rights and responsibilities.

In this Shared Activity, you will examine organisational responses to these issues. This Shared Activity should illuminate the options that organisations have when dealing with internal and external providers and handlers of data.

To prepare for this Shared Activity:

  • Research a formal organisational policy addressing an ethical and legal issue related to IS. Examples of policy statements may include:
    • An information privacy policy statement
    • An ethics statement (that contains references to issues pertaining to IS)
    • An end user licence agreement

To complete this Shared Activity:

  • Post a summary of the key points of the organisational approach you identified. Identify the stakeholders that are affected by this approach, and discuss how are they are affected. Explain any implications for the organisation and any stakeholders. Where possible, be sure to provide the statement or a link to it online.
  • As part of your posting, discuss your view of the effectiveness of the statement. Identify strengths and limitations, and any areas that you believe may be overlooked by the statement.
  • Compare the findings shared by the group. Identify common themes that emerge, and discuss the implications of these common themes for the IS professional.

Participate in this Shared Activity only during the period of this unit to ensure that you and your colleagues can keep track of one another’s postings and maintain a focused, collaborative discussion. Review the Syllabus and Shared Activities Rubric for information on how your contributions to the Shared Activities will be graded in this module. In each unit, you will receive feedback from your Faculty Member on your participation in the Shared Activities, focusing on your contributions to the learning community. In Unit 6, your Faculty Member will provide final feedback and a final grade on your Shared Activity contribution throughout the module.
